2008 South Texas College Institute for Emotional Intelligence

The 2008 South Texas College (STC) Institute for Emotional Intelligence will be held in the beautiful resort city of South Padre Island, Texas!  Reflected admirably in the leadership of this year’s conference host, South Texas College, the theme of the 5th annual conference is “Personal Excellence: Building Quality From Within.” The conference will be convened in the Sheraton South Padre Island hotel located on the beach. The regular two-day conference on Thursday and Friday, February 28-29, 2008 will highlight EI research and best practices in K-12 education, higher education, and business & government.

In conjunction with the 2008 STC Institute for Emotional Intelligence, a two-day pre-conference workshop is offered on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26-27, 2008. If you would like to become certified in the education model of EI, the Emotional Learning System (ELS), and related positive assessment instruments, please join the model’s authors, researchers, and other practitioners for this important workshop. Participants will learn about the strengths and limitations of the Emotional Skills Assessment Process (ESAP), as well as the newest EI instrument normed with professional adults, the Personal Excellence Map (PEM). If previously certified, you are invited to participate at a reduced rate and help shape the workshop in positive ways (previously certified individuals contact EI Learning Systems, Inc. to register).

For more information about the conference and workshop, please visit http://www.tamuk.edu/edu/kwei000/Conferences/2008/ and http://www.southtexascollege.edu/professionaldevelopment/stla/ei/index.html.

ESAP Now Available Online!

A year in the making, EI Learning Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the online ESAP© (http://www.EiLearningSys.com). If you are previously certified to work with the ESAP and would like access to the online instrument, please contact Rick Hammett (Rick@EiLearningSys.com) and ask to be added to the program manager’s database. He will provide you a program management account and assist with necessary explanations and tutorials about how the system works. If you have not yet certified with the ESAP, then we hope you will attend a pre-conference certification workshop either in Mumbai, India or South Padre Island, Texas early in 2008!

A Note of Gratitude from Dr. Low and Dr. Nelson

We were humbled and honored this past year by the nominations from students and faculty colleagues for the prestigious Texas A&M University System Regents Professor Award. It is the highest professorial award afforded to faculty, and the support we received from across the state, nation, and internationally was overwhelming and greatly appreciated.  For us, the most important thing we do is our collaboration and work with excellent students and professional colleagues.  We have dedicated our lives to studying the contributions of the emotional system to personal and organizational health and success.  Based on the education model of EI, there is a substantive and growing research base for the importance of personal skills, affective education, and emotional intelligence, now represented by over fifty doctoral dissertations from U.S. and international universities, as well as numerous major assessment and implementation projects in schools, colleges, and organizations.  There were at least eight dissertations completed in 2007 alone, and some 15 others are at various stages of progress.

We would like to thank our colleagues who supported our nomination.  While we were not selected for the Regents Professor Award, our portfolios were positively evaluated.  We are planning to submit our portfolios again in the coming year.  The support of colleagues is the highest possible recognition of our work, and we are grateful for your support and friendship.

Recap of the 2007 Institute for Emotional Intelligence

Last year’s conference, the fourth annual Institute for Emotional Intelligence, was convened on the beautiful campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville on February 21-23, 2007. The gathering’s success was assured by the over 200 people who attended from 35 states and nine different countries! Special thanks to our featured keynote speaker, friend, colleague, and the first recipient of the Personal Excellence Award, Margo Murray (Beyond the Myths and Magic of Mentoring: How to Facilitate an Effective Mentoring Process, Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2001). Margo’s speech on mentoring to address labor shortages, reproductive health, starvation, the spread of HIV/AIDS, and maternal and infant mortality was awe-inspiring. Thank you, Margo, for your leadership!
